Space Week | API’s New Rad-Hard Power Conversion & Control Products: Q & A with Alan Tasker, Senior Design Engineer

API Technologies designs and manufactures a wide range of space-qualified, rad-hard linear regulators offering quiet, linear voltage regulation with stabilities over the full temperature range approaching that of a very stable voltage reference. In this Q & A, Alan Tasker, Senior Design Engineer, discusses the benefits and features of these products, and the different models available. 

Q:  API recently launched new radiation hardened (rad-hard) power conversion & control products, including the APPREG Positive Voltage Regulator, the APPREG2 Positive Voltage Regulator with enable/disable capability, and the APNREG Negative Voltage Regulator. What makes these new products unique?

A: API is the first to offer these types of products as hybrids, so these are a completely new offering to the market. These products are available in three different models, giving engineers a range of options to best suit their individual needs. The basic model has a variable voltage range of 1.25 to 37, while the stable model has a range of 7.5 to 37 across the temperature range. The fixed model offers the most stability and is already trimmed to an exact voltage. They are available in 7.5, 10, or 15 volt designs.

Q: What new features are being introduced with these new products?

A: Each design is available with or without a voltage limit circuit. This functionality comes into play if a remote sense connection is broken. API is the only company offering full remote sense functionality with our power conversion and control products.  If the remote sense connection is severed, the optional resistor limits a rise in output voltage.

Q:  Who are some of the end users of these products, and in what applications can they be found?

A: These particular products are made specifically for the extreme radiation and temperature cycling found in space. They are MIL-PRF-38534 Class K compliant, which means that they meet the stringent requirements for government space, military, and aerospace programs. API’s rad-hard power conversion and control products can also be used for commercial applications such as communications satellites.

VIDEO: API Technologies Hawk-i™ Video Aiming Device Shot

API's award-winning Hawk-i™ Video Aiming Device was designed with safety and effectiveness in mind. The device uses a camera and rangefinder that mounts on a PAN barrel and adapts to any PAN Disrupter robotic platform, allowing the operator to remain at a safe distance from a target while still accurately firing. After a quick five minute system integration with no calibration required, crosshairs appear over a video image which is then relayed back to the control station through the robot's weapons port. The Hawk-i™ automatically adjusts crosshairs as the robot moves closer to the target, enabling faster action and decreasing the chances of a misfire due to human error.

API’s DC SMARTStart® PDU & the US Navy’s “Swarm” Boats

The US Navy recently announced that they have developed and successfully tested unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) also known as “swarm” boats. These autonomous vessels were designed to intercept enemy ships as well as to escort and protect naval assets, all while keeping sailors safe and costs down. Rather than putting the crews of several ships in harm’s way, a fleet of swarm boats can instead be used to engage with a threatening vessel and assess the situation. If weapons need to be used, a human sailor must then give the command, ensuring that the USVs do not accidentally or unintentionally fire. 

Controlled by a new technology called CARACaS (Control Architecture for Robotic Agent Command and Sensing), portable kits can be installed onto most current naval boats, allowing them to either operate autonomously or be controlled by a remote operator. These systems will be outfitted with API Technologies’ DC SMARTStart® Power Distribution Unit (PDU), a DC solid state power controller for switched power with built-in circuit protection. The PDU allows the operator to remotely power up the vessel’s loads or shut them down when they are not in use to conserve battery life. The DC SmartStart also functions as a system reboot that can be used in case of a power disruption or system freeze.

The DC SmartStart’s technical specifications make it ideal for use in unmanned vessels, vehicles, and aircraft: 

  • Input Voltage: -48 or +24 VDC with 12 channels
  • User configurable Solid State electronic circuit breaker technology
  • Flash upgradeable in the field
  • On-board SNMP agent
  • Six month event log
