Space Week | API’s New Rad-Hard Power Conversion & Control Products: Q & A with Alan Tasker, Senior Design Engineer

API Technologies designs and manufactures a wide range of space-qualified, rad-hard linear regulators offering quiet, linear voltage regulation with stabilities over the full temperature range approaching that of a very stable voltage reference. In this Q & A, Alan Tasker, Senior Design Engineer, discusses the benefits and features of these products, and the different models available. 

Q:  API recently launched new radiation hardened (rad-hard) power conversion & control products, including the APPREG Positive Voltage Regulator, the APPREG2 Positive Voltage Regulator with enable/disable capability, and the APNREG Negative Voltage Regulator. What makes these new products unique?

A: API is the first to offer these types of products as hybrids, so these are a completely new offering to the market. These products are available in three different models, giving engineers a range of options to best suit their individual needs. The basic model has a variable voltage range of 1.25 to 37, while the stable model has a range of 7.5 to 37 across the temperature range. The fixed model offers the most stability and is already trimmed to an exact voltage. They are available in 7.5, 10, or 15 volt designs.

Q: What new features are being introduced with these new products?

A: Each design is available with or without a voltage limit circuit. This functionality comes into play if a remote sense connection is broken. API is the only company offering full remote sense functionality with our power conversion and control products.  If the remote sense connection is severed, the optional resistor limits a rise in output voltage.

Q:  Who are some of the end users of these products, and in what applications can they be found?

A: These particular products are made specifically for the extreme radiation and temperature cycling found in space. They are MIL-PRF-38534 Class K compliant, which means that they meet the stringent requirements for government space, military, and aerospace programs. API’s rad-hard power conversion and control products can also be used for commercial applications such as communications satellites.

Over the past 40 years, API Technologies has been involved in several major space programs, providing RF/microwave and hybrid components, microwave semiconductors and microelectronic assemblies for a variety of commercial communications satellites, deep space, scientific missions, and launch/reentry vehicles. This includes NASA's recent successful Orion Launch and the groundbreaking Mars Curiosity Rover program. To meet the stringent requirements needed for involvement in these programs, API has two facilities which have received MIL-PRF-38534 Class K certification. Only 15 facilities worldwide have earned this coveted distinction, and API has two of them.

API’s Custom Cabling Offer Frequencies Up to 50 GHz

API Technologies is now using the next generation of software and 3D printing technology to create custom cables with frequencies ranging from 5 GHz to 50 GHz.   By molding the cable around the fixture created in SOLIDWORKS, these cables can be constructed for any specifications.  Shapes not achievable on a CNC coax bending machine can now be created to meet your individual needs for use in the military, aerospace, high-end industrial, oil and gas and medical applications.

Technical Specifications:

  • VSWR of less than 1.5:1
  • Frequencies ranging from 5 GHz to 50 GHz
  • Insertion loss less than 1db below 50 GHz

API’s cabling capabilities also include a wide range of cable harnessing, flat ribbon cable and ribbon cable processing, lead wire preparation, component, wire, and assembly making, electro-mechanical assembly and more!

Fall 2014 New Product Roundup

Our product teams have been hard at work this fall. In case you missed it, here is a summary of new API Technologies products announced over the past few weeks:

Already known as leaders in EMI filtering and protection products, we have extended our product line to address Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) threats. Our new line of Transient Energy Suppressant High Voltage HEMP Filters protects electronic equipment from potentially destructive energy transients due to surges, lightning, and electronic pulses (Press Release). 

We also announced the recent expansion of our Filtered Circular Connectors product line to Europe. Made in the UK, this line of filtered, MIL spec EMI connectors is an ideal choice for military, commercial aviation, and industrial applications.

Other products announced by our EIS product team include the new Semi-Rigid Coaxial Cables that offer excellent VSWR of less than 1.5:1 with frequencies ranging from 5 GHz to 50 GHz.

Along with a broad breadth of power management solutions – including the DC Solid State Power Controller - our Power team also offers innovative solutions products for military and homeland security. Our recently introduced Night Vision Test Set tests the quality of function of standard Gen II and Gen III night vision devices, including goggles, weapon sights, and drivers’ viewers. Throughout this year, we have expanded our RF/Microwave and Microelectronics product line to include even more standard and customizable products, including synthesizers and amplifiers. As a complement, this fall we introduced a new, interactive RF / Microwave Online Design Tool. Called “The Configurator” for short, this web and mobile accessible tool lets engineers easily modify standard products to meet their unique design requirements. 

Radiation Hardened Voltage Regulators also joined our expanding line of rad hard power management products for space and satellites. The APPREG2 line of voltage regulators features a specialized enable function, which conserves power by allowing users to selectively power up / power down certain sections of their system electronics.

Just last week we announced the SST Secure Venue Tablet, a mobile computing solution for top secret data protection. Designed by our SST™ Product Team in collaboration with Dell and ViaSat and partners Microsoft and Intel, the product offers a discreet and powerful computing option for NATO countries. Also, our EMCON® Product Team recently rolled out the EMCON TEMPEST Level 1 Lexmark CX510, a multi-function printer (MFP) / multi-function device (MFD) solution for sensitive data environments.
